I think the game is actually Theia choosing Helios over space travel. Most of the theories I see involve either Theia or Selene actively abandoning Helios. This is my understanding/interpretation of the story. Helios, the astronaut, the white shadow etc. There’s no astra, no space scouts, no Atropos - all of it is in selene’s dream. At the very end of the game she comes to accept the cycle as her place in the universe. She’s the cataclysm, the creator, the spaceship crash, etc. What’s “revealed” in the last video sequences, and what Selene eventually admits to herself, is that in addition to her mother’s accident in the late 60s, there was another accident in which she was the driver, and this is why she’s stuck in the cycle - she caused everything. As she’s between life and death she invents this whole world as a coping mechanism, but she becomes more and more aware of the reality she’s trying to keep suppressed. 1990s, Selene has an accident at the same spot and is critically injured, too. ~1970, selene’s mom Thea has a serious accident that prevents her from being an astronaut. That’s all you need to know about how the overload mechanic works in Returnal. Your Adrenaline levels will get reset when you get hit by an enemy, though, so don’t rely on this too much. Unlocking the first Adrenaline level will give you the Enhanced Overload buff, which makes it much easier to hit the charge spot when your weapon is cooling down. There is a way to make the overload mechanic a little more forgiving, and that’s by making use of the Adrenaline system. In the middle of that bar is a small colored area, and if you press the R2 button as the overload bar fills up and touches that middle area, the weapon will be reloaded immediately and you can start using it again. Once a weapon is overloaded, you’ll see a bar that starts charging up in the middle of your screen. However, there is a way to bypass that cooldown. It depletes as you shoot, and once it’s completely depleted, your weapon will overload and you’ll be unable to use it for a very short period of time. When firing, there will be a small white bar that pops up right below your reticle. There’s no proper ammo system in Returnal, but there are repercussions for firing your weapon without a care in the world. Here’s how the overload mechanic works in Returnal. That isn’t a bad thing, though, as Returnal as launched to great reception and critical acclaim, and has proven to be a pretty fun roguelite shooter with in-depth combat mechanics.
